As with most abandoned blogs something happens in the life of the author which makes the blog a much lower priority and ultimately the blog gets abandoned. A big event in our lives has happened and as a result I haven't posted anything here for over six months. Our son was born earlier last year and as this is our first child, our free time has disappeared.

A couple of other annoying issues also came up, like the fact that youtube had terminated my account without warning erasing all the videos of our shichon that were a part of this blog.

However, I have resolved to pick this up again and write about our experiences with our shichon and our new baby - in particular focusing on how the dog and the baby interact with each other.

So stay tuned for more pictures of the dog and the baby.

Portie - or porty - is the new white house dog

Well, finally a story everyone has been panting after. It's "barking" news, and we "unleash the news" a Portuguese water dog has been chosen by the Obamas as the first dog.

The president has been "dogged" by reporters who have been "gnawing" at the story since he made the mention at grant part. As we are "sinking our teeth" into the story, here is our first impression.

Well, I can't say that I am not disappointed that its not a shichon in the white house, but the Obamas have chosen and there it is.

Now we can put it behind us and get back to shichons.

Obamas Make a Dog Breed Choice - a Portugese Water Dog

According to the LA Times stpory Obama Portugese "First Dog will be a rescued Portuguese water dog, says Michelle Obama". The Obamas have chosen a Portugese Water Dog as their top, or their official white house dog.

Well, at least we know what type of dog breed we will have in the white house. Too bad its not a shichon.

Dog paws, dog booties and melting salt on sidewalks

As you know I love to watch my shichon play in the snow. Especially when the snow is fresh and his fur is grown out I think he looks just like an ewok-dog when he struggles through the drifts.

Here is what I mean

However what I have noticed is NOT fun is when are walking around on the sidewalks and they start to limp because their little paws are hurting. I have observed this several times and I am starting to suspect that rock salt put on the sidewalks to melt the snow away may be hurting my shichon.

I concerned about this and have been thinking this over and one of the reasons that I have been having such a hard time about this is that I am also vehemently opposed to any type of dog clothing. I think that in general the dogs dont like it, they look stupid and it borders on animal abuse.

Here is however a site which may change my mind. Check out the dog booties site created by some folks from Minesotta - and they know what cold means. I love that their tag line is:

So what are the Obamas waiting for? They moved in, the girls are in school - what else is there to be done? Is Barrack too busy to shop for a puppy for his girls? Clearly he doesn't have his priorities straight. I would highly recommend a design breed - a mutt if you like, Mr. Obama - shichon.

Unfortunately the shichon - the cutest teddy bear dog breed of the mix breeds will not appear in the results of the American Kennel Club poll to help recommend the next white house dog.

In August, more than 42,000 Americans cast their vote in the AKC®'s poll to determine the right breed of dog for the Obamas at www.presidentialpup.com. The Poodle was chosen from a list of five hypoallergenic breeds, each with distinct characteristics that made them uniquely suited for Obama's daughter who suffers from allergies.

The top white house dogs in question were:

- bichone frise
- The Chinese Crested
- The Miniature Schnauzer
- The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
- The poodle

Of course we feel deeply disapointed that no mixed breed dogs made it on the list so a shichon is a write in for us. All of the dogs on the list are hyperalergenic and so is our little teddy bear shichon.

Of course it would be fitting that Obama pick a mutt - after his own admission.

First Dog exclusive: Will a shi-tzu beat out the shichon?

I was disappointed to see that a shichon was not included in this Vote for first dog - the white house dog Chicago Tribune poll.

Barack Obama promised his daughters they could get a puppy if he ran for President. What kind of dog should the Obama family bring to the White House?

Currently the "shelter dog" is running in first place with Goldendoodle in second place with 2166 votes and a shi-tzu in third place.

However to a keen eye an interesting trend emerges. the Shi-tzu is in third place with 1587 votes and a Bichon Frise is in fifth place. However if you combined the two dogs, which is what a shichon is - a Bichon Frise and a Shit-tzu - you get a front runner.

There you have it... the Shichon deserves the presidential obama family first dog spot in the administration - the white house dog.

Obama family dog - Why not choose a shichon

I wanted to continue on my motorcycle transport theme but I can't ignore what everyone is searching for - who will be the First Family - the Obama family dog, aka the White House dog. Of course I strongly recommend the Shichon breed as the "American First dog" or would it be the "US Presidential Family first dog". Shichons cute and hypoallergenic AND they are kind of a mutt... like Obama!! (its a joke people, in case you haven't heard, he referred to himself in that way as a joke).

Of course everyone is speculating on the first dog, this story in the Chicago Tribune about Barack Obama: Obama promises daughters puppy in the white house.

Sasha and Malia Obama, if you are out there - Shichons are the one for you. Shichon is a natural first dog candidate. Of course, this being a democratic family I am not going to run negative ad campaigns against the other dogs. I'll let the Shichon record stand on its own... just check out the puppy pictures.

Zuchon vs. Shichon

Both names refer to the same mixed breed, a cross between a Shi-tzu and a Bichon Feese. The question is, which one is becoming more accepted in the main stream. As far as I can tell the names are interchangable, wiki defines both shichon and zuchon as:

a breed of dog, a cross between a Bichon and a Shih Tzu

American Kennel Club does not recognize this hybrid mix, however the American Canine Hybrid Club does, and calls it a Zuchon.

We have written about the popularity of the terms Zuchon and Shichon this January based on tecnocrati search and at the time the term Zuchon was winning. Looking at this again it seems to be tied.

Finally, checking out google trends the evidence stacks up agains Zuchon in favor of Shichon.

So, next time you are walking your adorable little teddy bear puppy and someon asks what is it... what's it gonna be - Zuchon os Shichon?

Dog Transportation

My primary mode of transportation during the summer is my motorcycle. When our little zuchon was a puppy he rode in my backpack. When he started getting bigger (they dont get much bigger than shi tzus) he was too big for the backpack and he did pretty well if I put him on the tank of the motorcycle.

Last summer he got used to riding on the tank of the motorcycle. He stands, or sits, there all by himself. he can balance himself on turns and during stops. The wind doesnt bother him too much, in fact I think he loves to ride on the motorcycle. He is a true motorcycle loving dog.

For safety, when we ride I put him in a harness, i snap a leach on to the harness and tie it around my waist so that in case that he decides to jump he cant go far. He has never slipped off, slipped, or attempted to jump.

However this summer we had a concern about him getting hurt if I crash on the bike. The problem is that if I crash - and i always wear a helmet - he can crack his little doggie skull.

He loves to ride and so do I. Should I make tihs decision for him? Is he really that much worse off than in a car where he'll become a flying zuchon projectile anyway in case of an accident?

So being a geek, I spent a bit more time on the site to check out its functionality. I noticed that they had their own flash player, failry unusual and they were seeking advertisers. Clearly a web video channel which must be a part of a bigger company. CORRECT!

So i noticed that the readers of "All about Shichon - or Zuchon - dog generally follow the puppy pictures and puppy video links.

My shichon - Monkey - or as one of my friends yesterday called this blog, the monkey blog, even has his own YouTube channel. But looking at the stats its not conclusive what is more popular, the dog pictures or dog videos.

There was an article in the San Francisco Chronicle today with some interesting dog statistics: "Man's best friends getting man's best names".

They're not just Fluffy, Rover and Fido anymore.

As dog and cat ownership has expanded to nearly 2 out of 3 American households and spending on pet pampering products has exploded, Bay Area residents have taken to giving their animals more human-sounding names - such as Max, Lucy, Samantha, Charlie or, in the case of one San Francisco papillon spaniel, William III.

But the most commonly loved pet of all, according to a Chronicle review of more than 60,000 pet licenses, is a Labrador retriever named just plain Buddy. He lives in at least 89 different Bay Area homes, the data show

Small dogs for macho guys

Oh dear. I am bringing home my shichon puppy over Easter weekend. I never had to worry about my cat chewing on things...I guess I need to start puppy-proofing things now.

I do have a question...do you ever get disparaging remarks for owning a "designer dog"? I witnessed a nasty verbal attack on a puggle owner earlier this week, and I've seem some not-so-nice comments on some message boards.

At first I thought that SusannahS referred to the fact that some folks may look down on a man who preferred cuteness and cuddability of a cute designer dog, such as a Shichon or a Puggle over a stereotypical dog, like say a German shepherd. Than i realized that this was only my deep secret irrational fear and she was not saying that at all.

SusannahS, who on earth would want to spend their time demeaning little dogs because they come from a designer breed? Thinking of my shichon, the only fear I have is of loosing him. Sure, my guy friends snickerred a little when they saw me (a tatooed, motorcycle riding, goat teed, ex-brawler and wrestler - should i come up with more stupid stereotypes) with a cute little doggie. But in a bout two minutes they want to play with the puppie too. But anyway, we're back on my insecurities.

I still dont understand what someone can have against a designer breed. As for macho wannabees, the best quote I heard was: "you dont need to have a big dog to be a big dog".

and all you haters out there... what do you have to say about this guy here?

Dog Eat Mud - dirty dirt eater

So I have discovered that in addition to having a sweet tooth for my electronics, my dog also loves to eat mud. Why do dogs eat dirt? There are plenty of articles on the web with explanations of why dogs eat grass, but why do dogs eat dirt?

The ground is starting to thaw and today on our morning walk, our little shichon started chowing on some mud. Yes, our dog was eating mud. Not just sniffing, not tasting, full out eating mud.

I quickly realized that we had this problem before. I dont really have a problem with it, except that they get very dirty. They burrow their snouts into the ground and their faces get extremely muddy.

A quick check around the internet confirms that once again I am not the first one having this problem. Here is a response to a question of "Why does my dog eat dirt" on Healthy Pet:

Most cases of dogs eating dirt or grass are behavioral problems. It is usually nothing to be worried about

Since the zuchons come from seemingly "clean" breeds I didn't think we'd have this problem. Also, its not clear whether we should stop his dirt eating or just let it continue.

It looks like there are forums of folks chatting about this problem. Interestingly, looks like eating dirt is not the dirties of habits... there are a lot of dog poop eaters - YUCK. At least he is not eating his own poop.

My dog is eating my electronics

Our dog is a good dog. He is potty trained. He rarely has any accidents. He knows how to fetch, he knows how to obay commands to sit, lay down, come, and shake.

We are also very lucky in that he hasnt been chewing on couches, furniture, shes or socks. He does have one weakness. He loves my electronics. He loves to eat blackberries, cell phones, cameras, network cables, power chargers, and sometimes even live power supplies. Here is a picture of his latest desert of my plantronics blue tooth ear piece.

We are not sure why he loves to eat electronic gadgets. We aren't sure how to train him otherwise. We provide him with bones to chew and congs so he generally leaves our stuff alone, yet he generally prefers a new shiny gadget to a hide. How do we break this habit?

The Chicago Tribune had a great article in the Transportation section about safety features in cars for dog transport. Jen Mystkowski had a great half page shot of a little dog on the cover. Unfortunatly the article is only available to online scubscribers - and i am not one of them.
Here is what i was able to get from the site and in case you have access here is the Sit. Stay. Safely. article link.

Fencing, bags, safety belts, hammocks, car seats, kennels? these are just some of the items that make car-travel safe and comfortable for Fido or Fluffy.

Westminster Dog Show - Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise

I can not believe that I have found myself watching the Westminster Dog show. I suppose our little shichon has made a big impact on us. Although a shichon is not a recognized breed by the westmister dog kenel, the Shichon / Zuchon parents are.

Grooming Disaster - part 1

Our poor little shichon puppy had to get all of his fur cut off! Yes, it is middle of January, and despite my pleading and strictly against my suggestions, my wife took him to the groomers and had him completely shaved.

See for yourself:

Now after the grooming:

Granted he actually looks like he has legs, but he is COLD! Especially since it dropped to 10 degrees Fahrenheit in Chicago a week after all his fur was gone. Just see how comfortable hi is in this video of him (with his fur) frolicking around in the snow.

Now there were reasons for this. Apparently Shichons (and I suppose other small dogs like the Bichons and Shitzus) need special grooming brushes etc, and his fur was 'rasta' like matted. But more on this in Grooming lessons part 2.

I have decided to take the dog to work today. We work in a small office and most everyone there loves to have the little puppy there.

I had an important call with a potential new customer this morning. Right as we were in the middle of discussing our strategy, the dog started barking. WHAT A DISASTER!!

I can only image that our customer thinks we are a bunch of yahoos. Is it really appropriate to bring a dog to work? It certainly was distracting when he was barking.

I really wanted to punt him, but then on of my colleagues emailed me this picture to remind me how cute this little shichon/zuchon is.

We found out where Monkey (our Shichon or Zuchon puppy) came from!

Well, we know where he came from, but here is the breeder site. - LOVEOURDOGS.COM It looks like they breed Shichons as well as other designer breeds.

Here is what the site says about Shichons:

Shichon (Shih Tzu/Bichon)

Shichon is a Shih Tzu/ Bichon mix. The breed also referred to as Teddy Bears or Zuchon. They are playful and lively, but also very gentle and calm. The temperament is that of a very gentle, self-assured and well mannered dog. The Shichon is friendly with everyone and love to just sit near you. Winter Potty

This was the coldest weekend in January so far this year. As January is Chicago's coldest month, and it gets pretty cold here, it was a COLD one. We had temperatures drop to -18F (feels like) and -5 Fahrenheit its pretty cold. And the dog walking gets pretty short.

I have observed a peculiar thing in our puppy. When taken out first day of the cold spell, after a few minutes he started lifting his paws and holding them up. He actually looked like his paws were freezing! Of course this is unconfirmed but its strange.

Now I have heard or read somewhere that Huskies and big sled dogs don't have feeling in the tips of their paws and they can survive the deep freeze without feeling it. Unfortunately our dog is a shichon (also called a Zuchon) a descendant of the ShiTzu and a Bichon. I doubt that his ancestors had developed this survival component.

So until it warms up to at least to 15 F degrees we will have to make our potty outings breef. Interestingly he has started picking up the speed in which he decides to get his business done. There is a bright side to taking the dog out in blistery and bitter cold of the winter.

Here is a video of monkey frolicking in the snow. We've been wondering how he is going to react to snow covering up the yard where he just barely got used to going potty. We are happy to report that there were no long lasting problems. There were certainly several accidents as he didnt get used to going in the snow initially. After several long waits and good treats after he went, he got used to his old grounds and fell into the old good habits again.

Dog Adolescence

So we have our puppy potty trained. He is very good at home, and hasn't had
an accident for over two months.

However we have found that he is only potty trained at home. When I take
him to the office for an extended amount of time he does not abide by the
same rules he was taught at home. He does go out if he is taken for a walk,
but he is unable to hold it in the office. We thought that he would
eventually stat following potty rules that he learned at home, however today
was the last straw on that hope.

I believe a re-training is in order for a new location. We'll keep you
posted on the progress.

Coloring in the shichons can vary, and colors can come out or be taken out based on how the dog is trimmed and groomed. Take a look at the picture of these two shichon puppies and the difference in their color. The one on the right used to have more color before he was groomed.

Puppy invades Promet Office

Can dogs in the office decrease on increase productivity? The argument for productivity decrease is that one can spend a lot of time playing with the dog instead of working. On the other hand, playing with the dog for a second can be relaxing and just the stress relieve you may need to get back to work and be more productive. The jury is still out...

Puppy in the Office

I'm still not very convinced that the office is a good place for a dog. Well, from a dogs point of view, its probably a GREAT place; lots of people, good space, there is someone always around to play with. From a professional point of view I think the jury is still out.

A puppy in the office can be a total disaster. Take a look at this one trying to chew through our network cables!

Commuting with a Puppy - Dogs on Bikes, Motorcycles and Human Carirers

I commute every day about 3 miles to and from the office. Working in a dog friendly office allows me to take the puppy to work. I either drive to work, bicycle or take my motorcycle. My preferred way of commuting is using my bicycle. Outside of putting the puppy in my front seat when I take the car, commuting with a dog on two wheels isn't exactly easy.

Which got me thinking about 'Puppy safety' yesterday as I was rolling along as the puppy in my backpack tried to jump climb out and carelessly jump into the street. I doubt there are any laws which dictate safety measures for transporting animals.

It would seem that taking the car is the safest option. However when transporting a dog in the car, what is the proper etiquette? When driving with a puppy is it better to put them in a cage, in your lap or on the passenger seat? I don't think it really matters. Although the Canine Care Safety page recommends a cage, I think a dog being a canon ball when you hit a stop at 30mph inside or outside a cage wont matter for the dog.

If you make a sudden emergency stop, or are involved in a crash at just 30mph, a dog who is not restrained in the back seat can turn into a potentially lethal missile, warns the AA...

I think either way, the dog is more endangered than the driver.

Motorcycle and Bicycle with a puppy

I think for the dog these must be the safest options. Here is my rationale. If involved in a car accident, the dog will most likely be injured because it will become a projectile and will hit a hard stop breaking bones. In case of a bicycle or motorcycle accident, the puppy will fly as well, but will have a much easier landing. I think the biggest danger in that case is for the dog to be run over by traffic.

Which brings me to my current problem. Transporting the dog on a bicycle right now is problamatic for me as I don't yet have a bicycle dog basket. I tried putting the dog in my backpack but he has figured out how to unzip and try to jump out. My wife provided me with a dog carrier which I use right now, clipping the dog in to his dog collar. I guess for ultimate puppy safety I need to get a vest harness for the puppy, a human front carrier, and clip the dog to the human front carrier.

So far, the dog seems to enjoy the motorcycle rides.

So My Wife and I got an 8 week Schion puppy three days ago. Here is my puppy experiance up to now:

Day 1 - the puppy is very timid and even afraid to explore its surroundings
Day 2 - the puppy is a little more adventurous, starts whining if he wants something
